Verrazano-Narrows Bridge

The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is a double-deck suspension bridge that connects the boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn in New York City. When it opened in 1964, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was the world’s longest suspension span. The length of the bridge between the anchorages is 6,690 feet, with the main span at 4,260 feet long between two 693-foot-high towers. The original 1960 upper level concrete roadway is being replaced with a lighter and stiffer steel orthotropic deck that will have significantly greater durability and improved seismic and wind performance. Additionally, the new decking system is a continuous structure without expansion joints which will offer an improved life span.

Alta Vista is providing independent quality assurance services for the owner. Our services include materials engineering and fracture mechanics consulting, developing an independent quality assurance system for the fabrication of the orthotropic deck panels, and providing quality assurance inspection services.
