ENGINEER II – SACRAMENTO, CA

The Engineer II will perform engineering, supervisory and contract management services to support the Caltrans Independent Assurance Program and the Office of Roadway Materials Testing. The Engineer II will manage materials inspectors, oversee their operations and training, and ensure quality management as related to these services. The responsibilities will include: working with internal and external parties to plan; maintain knowledge of internal procedures, DIR regulations, and Caltrans Contracts to provide guidance and conduct standard supervisory tasks; assist in the scheduling and management of the material inspector training program, assist Program Manager in completing project-specific contract documents and reports, and other duties as assigned. Services will be performed under the supervision of a Professional Engineer, and results are subject to review.

Some travel may be required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervisory roles over materials inspectors to include approving timesheets, documenting accidents, conducting performance evaluations and managing/scheduling JTCP training
  • Coordinate dispatch of materials inspectors
  • Assist in the development and implementation of program management documents
  • Establish computer-based queries to analyze reported data
  • Create, maintain, and deliver data evaluation reports at all levels from executive summaries to detailed performance reports
  • Ensure engineering services are completed on time
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks as needed to support material testing services
  • Completing and coordinating contract-related documents with clients (i.e. monthly progress reports, personnel requests, etc.)
  • Develop and execute engineering services
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.S. in Civil Engineering or related field required
  • 1-7 years of professional relevant experience required; a Master’s Degree in Engineering will be considered as one year
  • Valid California Driver’s License required
  • Experience working on roadway and highway related projects preferred
  • Effective written, interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work as part of a team involving staff, clients and outside agencies
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including identifying data quality issues
  • Strong organizational skills, including an ability to prioritize activities
  • Results oriented and able to complete tasks on deadline with little supervision
  • Ability to make good decisions using sound, professional judgment
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office (Word & Excel)
  • Knowledge of materials, approved methods and equipment used in physical testing of construction materials preferred
  • Knowledge of material testing requirements as they relate to Caltrans Special Provisions, Standard Specifications, and Construction Manual preferred
  • Knowledge of quality management systems as they relate to the physical testing of construction materials preferred
