VERRAZANO-NARROWS BRIDGE MATERIALS ENGINEERING AND FRACTURE MECHANICS
For this double-deck suspension bridge connecting Staten Island with Brooklyn, Alta Vista provided independent quality assurance services that included materials engineering and fracture mechanics consulting and an independent QA system for orthotropic deck fabrication. The VN bridge’s upper-level concrete deck was replaced with a lighter, stiffer steel orthotropic deck for better durability, seismic and wind performance, and lifespan.
We provided QA inspection services including ASNT NDT Level II and III testing (PAUT and magnetic particle), AWS CWI inspections, testing and verification, plant inspection and quality assurance, independent sampling, and coating testing. Our staff’s global experience and effective partnering helped us collaborate with overseas fabricators, provide continuous support in remote areas to ensure quality standards, and resolve complex technical challenges to successfully complete the deck replacement.
