BAY BRIDGE QUALITY ASSURANCE INSPECTION AND MATERIALS ENGINEERING
Alta Vista provided quality assurance inspection and materials engineering for the self-anchored suspension (SAS) span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The longest of its kind in the world, the new span is one of the first bridges built with a single tower and a single main cable, with an innovative and seismically sound design.
Our team worked both domestically and internationally during fabrication, providing quality assurance inspection and nondestructive testing that ensured quality and on-time delivery. Alta Vista developed inspection protocols and specifications, and implemented Caltrans’ quality assurance program in close cooperation with all involved parties. We oversaw steel fabrication inspection for the bridge, and developed systems and processes that resulted in better quality, fewer weld repairs, and lower labor costs. Our technical experts also provided structural health monitoring and instrumentation, ensuring that the bridge could withstand the seismic activity and traffic loads needed to move travelers safely.
Our team also provided plant inspections, welding inspections, specialized concrete inspections, and facility audits. One of our first projects, we’re proud to have been a part of bringing this bridge into safe operation, and helping build a lasting landmark for the Bay Area.
